Portraits of Lord Byron by: Richard Westall n.d., Theodore Gericault n.d., and Thomas Phillips in 1813-14 and 1814
Lord Byron (1788-1824, born George Gordon Byron) was an English poet most associated with the Romantic movement. Some of his most famous works include the satiric poem ‘Don Juan’, ‘The Prisoner of Chillon’ and ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage’. He died in Missolonghi, Greece, at the age of just 36, after fighting in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.
One of my favourite books when I was younger was ‘The Children’s Classic Poetry Collection’, and I am 90% sure it contained Byron’s ‘She Walks in Beauty’. I think we still have it in the loft, so I’ll have to check next time I’m up there!
